The Great Cake Challenge

Intro:
So I was watching "Julie & Julia" the other night and so totally relating to Julie that it was downright scary.  I thought, "hey, I like to cook and I have a blog, how cool would it be to do something similar?"   But then I remembered that a friend of a friend was telling me just the other day how she was doing just that, and I decided I didn't want to be a copy cat!  At least not so obvious a copy cat.  So I thought and I thought and then it came to me.  Rather than blogging my way through a cookbook, why not blog my way through a cake book?

Since you already know I love to bake cakes and decorate them, and I'm always striving to improve my decorating skills, it seems the perfect solution.  SO... here's my challenge to myself.  I am going to work my way through the book "The Cake Decorator's Motif Bible".  It contains 150 designs in Fondant! (a total of 175 designs, as it has some non-fondant designs as well)

Now I could just make the fondant and do the designs on parchment paper or foam cake forms, but what's the fun in that?  I'd rather put them on real cakes!! But I don't think 175 cakes in a year is terribly realistic for me at this point, since I only bake and decorate on the side.  While I'm sure many of these designs could be used together and that I wouldn't need a full 175 cakes, nonetheless, I think I'll be better off not setting a timeline at this point.

Cake Updates:
Oct. 10, 2011- So I made my first fondant figures for my hubby's birthday.  I was trying to make a "lake scene", using 5 fondant figures... frogs, turtles, fish, lily pads, and dragon flies.  The turtle and dragon flies turned out pretty close to the template.  The lily pads really needed to be made out of gum paste, which I didn't know ahead of time.  The fish were a little tricky, but I think they turned out ok.  So 5 down, only 170 to go!!  Yikes... at this rate I'll only need to make 35 cakes... haha!

So pics of the cake:
